Monday Morning Mumblings

1. Did I mention it’s already H-O-T in Texas?  Last Saturday was BellaRoo’s last kickball game and closing ceremony; complete with bounce houses and slip-n-slides.  She had a blast; and I have to say, after waiting around on trophies for 2+ hours in the heat, I was minutes way from joining her on the slip-n-slide… maternity shorts and all.

2. Speaking of maternity… I am 27 weeks today. Grow baby, grow!  Sophia is now the size of a rutabaga.  And yes, both my husband and I had to google image search what a rutabaga looked like ha-ha.

3. Speaking of being the size of a rutabaga… can we all just vote real quick to have ‘Pregnant People Parking” at every building like they do at baby stores?  Especially at my work.  I have to park what feels like 10 miles away(uphill, both ways, in the snow), and increase my walking waddling time allowance the farther along I get ha-ha.  And did I mention it’s hot???  And did I mention we had a Texas summer thunderstorm one day last week and I forgot my umbrella?  Ugh.

4. When I wasn’t baking in the sun this weekend, I was baking in my kitchen.  I made some really cute treats that I can’t share with you just yet.  You see, I’m shipping these treats to my friend, so once they arrive safely to her I will share them with you.  Here’s a hint: they are yummy.  And pink.  And covered in sprinkles.  And may or may not have reminded me that it’s been awhile since I practiced my piping skills.

5. Do you want to send a treat to someone deserving?  Head over to i am baker where she has put out a call for bakers to sign up to send something to someone in need of some joy.  Find out more about Desserts for the Deserving.

6. How adorable is this shipping tape I found?  Look familiar?  It totally matches my blog.  So fun.

7. I used one of my menu planners last night! We planned out our entire week of dinners, and… wait for it…. went to the store and bought everything we need in ONE trip.  Didn’t print one off yet?  Hurry here.

8. Last night’s dinner was cheese enchiladas.  Or I should say homemade guacamole with a side of cheese enchiladas.  If you follow me on instagram or twitter you saw my plea to start a guac-aholics anonymous group.  Help.

9. You might remember last week I announced my {slow} transition to WordPress.  I am now working with a blog designer to re-vamp Sweet Bella Roos for the move!  I am so excited!

10. Ok this isn’t so much a mumble as it is a full on rant.  Can we talk about “Dream Lites” real quick?  Does your child watch Sprout?  Have you seen this annoying commercial that they show 24,596,327 times a day?  Saturday night BellaRoo (who is usually a TROOPER about going to bed) is crying (at midnight no less) saying she is SUDDENLY afraid of the dark.  I immediately know where this is going.  She sings along with this commercial.  She has memorized the website to repeat it back to me.  She is mesmerized by these glorified pillow pets with night lights shoved up them.  On her third attempt out of bed she finally fesses up the real deal… ‘but mommy, if I only had a dream lite’.  That’s it.  Where is the manufacturer located?  How quickly can I drive there to yell at them and their marketing team in person… at midnight preferably?

Seriously.  Thank you for that stroke of marketing genius to put the idea of being scared of the dark into the heads of children who sleep just fine without your &%*$@#^ Dream Lite!  Now maybe this is an opportunity to talk to BellaRoo about how ‘we don’t always get what we want’ or some other parenting garble like that…. but not at midnight.  Or maybe I am having an irrational-pregnant-woman-hormonal-overreaction to this whole issue, but I am so ticked off at the Dream Lite people.  And after a quick search online, it doesn’t appear that I am the only one.  (If you aren’t familiar with the commercial you can see a review of it here or search it on YouTube… I refuse to link the Dream Lite website).  I will be sending an e-mail to Dream Lites (if I can ever find their contact information… interesting that they don’t make that easily accessible for you), to their parent company Ontel Products Corporation, and to Sprout to express my irrational-pregnant-woman-hormonal-overreaction feelings.

I bought my son a twilight turtle well before I ever saw a dream lite commercial. They have real Constellations that they project onto the ceiling, he never uses it at night for bedtime just to see the stars on the ceiling. And you can buy them at Wal Mart or Target. I have also read reviews about the dream lites and how crappy they are, I am glad that I got a twilight turtle. He isn’t as ugly as the dream lites or as expensive either. He might be a good alternative for her if she doesn’t stop talking about, they have a lady bug too. And They come with a little story book and where you can find the constellations it has.

Thanks for the tip! My husband loves astronomy (we actually met in an astronomy class in college) so I’m sure he would appreciate that it has real constellations.

Hello! Great post! I homeschool my daughter, and this morning we are talking about Author’s Purpose. We use the acronym PIE – Persuade, Inform, and Entertain. The Dream Lite is my example for Persuade. My daughter received a Dream Lite for her 6th birthday because after watching that commercial (exactly as you said!) “24,596,327 times,” she asked and asked and asked and put it on her list of things she wanted for her birthday. We are also discussing how commercials can be confusing – they lead us to think that things that we WANT are just as important as things that we NEED. When I hear that commercial the song gets stuck in my head. I end up singing it all around the house, but I change the words to “PLAY light” because, with the exception of 2 or 3 kids, all of them are playing and not sleeping :)
