What to pack for a blog conference #Giveaway

What to pack for a blog conference sweetbellaroos.com #giveaway #marthastewart

I posted yesterday about my experience at the Build Your Blog Conference this past weekend.  Today I want to share with you some tips on how to pack and what I plan to do differently at my next conference!

One of the best things I packed was my new Martha Stewart tote.  I was able to fit everything I needed for the conference into this bag.  My laptop, iPad mini, notebooks, pens, business cards, phone chargers, DSLR camera, snacks, wallet, and tons of other stuff. It worked out perfectly because this tote was big enough to fit everything I needed, but still small enough to count as my “personal item” on the plane- slid right under the seat.

I loved several things about this bag.  The reinforced straps were great, and just the right length.  I hate when you aren’t able to “swing” a bag on your shoulder using just one arm (you know what I’m talking about?) but it’s so important when your other hand is full, or when running through an airport.  I also loved the durable canvas material; I didn’t have to worry about scratches or scuffs, and felt confident it could handle the weight of all the junk necessities I crammed in there.  Probably my favorite feature was the collapsible snaps on the sides.  You can see in the picture above what a difference this makes when the snaps are open vs. closed.  Another bonus: the pockets inside are elastic.  (Such a great idea right? Martha seriously thinks of everything.)

This tote is available with the new Martha Stewart Home Office with Avery line exclusively at Staples.  I highly recommend this bag- for travel, to take to a conference, to carry scrapbook supplies, as a book bag at school… it really is so versatile.  My roommate at the conference was carrying one too!

Here are some tips on what to pack and some lessons learned from my experiences:

pack

  1. Comfortable shoes!  This is not the time to break in your adorable new heels, in fact, I wouldn’t recommend heels at all unless you are used to wearing them regularly.  You will be doing A LOT of standing around and walking, so go for something sensible.  I promise most people won’t even remember what shoes you were wearing… unless maybe they are a fashion blogger.
  2. Speaking of fashion… don’t feel like you need to go out and buy a new wardrobe, and don’t feel like you need to squeeze into your one-size-too-small skinny jeans.  Comfort is the key word here, because if you don’t feel comfortable in what you are wearing it is going to set the tone for your day.  Remember that everyone there is going to be waving around a camera, so opt for outfits that will photograph well- nicely fitted, colors that compliment your hair or skin tone, and make you feel confident!
  3. So about the paparazzi- I can count on one hand how many people I saw lugging around their DSLR’s… and I was one of them.  I wish I had brought my point-and-shoot instead; looking back I feel like this should have been a no-brainer.  Save your DSLR for the sightseeing around town, but take your P&S to snap pics at the conference (otherwise you will end up with grainy iPhone pics of you with one of your fav bloggers!)
  4. Snacks!  Most conferences will feed you one (or more) meals, but pack some snacks in your bag.  Granola bars, fruit, crackers are all great options.  This is especially important if you are traveling- with the time zone differences, jet lag, and everything else going on my body didn’t know when it was time to eat.  Also keep in mind any dietary restrictions or preferences you have so that you will be prepared if the options offered don’t work for you!
  5. {Extra} Business cards!  Both conferences I have attended in the past had a big table set up right when you walk in where people can put down a stack of business cards.  Personally, I don’t like this concept.  On one hand I feel like it’s a waste of cards but on the other hand I realize that it’s a way to reach people that you won’t be able to talk to in person.  I just feel like I walk away with too many duplicates, and it really bogs down the flow with everyone standing around the table trying to grab cards.  So bring enough cards that you will be able to participate in the card table roulette and also hand out to people as you network.  *Also think about how you are going to organize your cards.  I always bring a hole punch and a key ring to put all the cards on, but you might prefer a box or case to keep them in.  Think ahead and pack accordingly.

Another thing I recommend bringing is your laptop or tablet.  When we had down time, you could find us all in our room on our laptops ha-ha.  And because I love you, I’m going to help you get your electronics ‘conference ready’!

  3. I love all of Martha’s products but especially her stack+fit desk accessories! I agree with you – I’m not 100% a fan of the business card roulette table… takes away a lot of the networking i should have been doing instead.
